Biological effects of low doses of ionizing radiation: A fuller picture
نویسنده
چکیده
hen the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) submitted its 1994 report to the United Nations General Assembly this year, the international community received a fuller picture of the biological effects of low doses of ionizing radiation. The 272-page 1994 report specifically addresses epidemiological studies of radiation carcinogenesis and adaptive responses to radiation in cells and organisms. The report is designed to supplement the more extensive 928-page report that UNSCEAR presented to the UN in 1993.* That report addressed global levels of radiation as well as major issues of radiation effects, including the mechanisms of radiation oncogenesis; the influence of level of dose and dose rate on stochastic effects of radiation; hereditary effects of radiation; radiation effects on the developing human brain; and late deterministic effects in children. Taken together, these two reports provide an impressive account of current knowledge on the biological effects of ionizing radiation. This article — though by no means an account of all essential information — summarizes the highlights of UNSCEAR's assessment of the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation, hereinafter called " low radiation doses" (see box, page 39) in the context of available radiobiological evidence.

Radiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation
Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects ...
متن کاملIn vivo Exposure Effects of 99mTc-methoxyisobutylisonitrile on the FDXR and XPA Genes Expression in Human Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes
Objective(s): In recent years, the application of radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine has increased substantially. Following the diagnostic procedures performed in nuclear medicine departments, such as myocardial perfusion imaging, patients generally receive considerable doses of radiation. Normally, radiation-induced DNA damages are expected following exposure to a low-dose ionizing radia...
متن کاملA Novel Biological Dosimetry Method for Monitoring Occupational Radiation Exposure in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Wards: From Radiation Dosimetry to Biological Effects
Background and Objective: Professional radiation workers are occupationally exposed to long-term low levels of ionizing radiation. Occupational health hazards from radiation exposure, in a large occupational segment of the population, are of special concern. Biological dosimetry can be performed in addition to physical dosimetry with the aim of individual dose assessment and biological effects....
متن کاملINF/IL-4 increases after the low doses of gamma radiation in BALB/c spleen lymphocytes
Introduction: The effects of the low dose of ionizing radiation are not thoroughly evident due to an unavoidable increase of occupational exposure and the widespread application of ionizing radiation in medical and industrial fields. The aim of this study was to investigate immune system responses following the low doses of ionizing radiation. Materia...
متن کاملAn in-vivo study on the energy dependence of X-ray biological effectiveness
Background: The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has attributed the same relative risk for X and gamma radiations of all energies. Several studies have proven that the biological effect of low energy photon is more than that of higher ones. The assessment of risks is important due to the wide use of low energy X-rays for mammography screening and other diagnostic appli...
